Jakarta Film Week Welcomes New Filmmakers Through the Jakarta Film Fund Program

Jakarta, 20 September 2021. In the midst of the ongoing pandemic, the Jakarta Film Week, an international film festival initiated by the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office, is here to revive the creative spirit of the film industry.

One of the programs presented at this festival is the Jakarta Film Fund. A short filmmaking competition that provides production, technical, and training support for the five selected proposals.

On 12 September 2021, the registration for the Jakarta Film Fund participants was officially closed. As many as 141 short film proposals were received at the end of registration. The number shows high level of enthusiasm from the filmmaker communities to participate in the Jakarta Film Fund, despite all kinds of limitations due to the pandemic.

“We received extraordinary responses from filmmakers in Jakarta who still have a strong dream to continue working in the middle of the pandemic. This is very encouraging, because not only is the Jakarta Film Week a momentum for the revival of the film industry, but also an encouragement to facilitate the regeneration of filmmakers in Indonesia,” said Lisa Siregar, as the program coordinator of the Jakarta Film Week.

Of the total submitted proposals that were curated, ten (10) proposals made it to the top selection and were entitled to participate in the pitching forum, where five best proposals have then been selected. The five proposals will receive production assistance fund of IDR 30 million each. The judges who will choose the five best proposals include Gumilar Ekalaya as the Acting Head of Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office, director and screenwriter Yosep Anggi Noen, and cinematographer Agni Ariatama.

“After a long curation process, five proposals were selected by experts in their fields. The Jakarta Film Week is a breath of fresh air for film industry players in Indonesia to be back at producing films, being in an educational space, promoting new talents who later will be of great benefit to the Jakarta film ecosystem, and becoming part of a joint effort to rebuild Indonesian cinema. And last but not least, the festival is held as an effort to support local producers.

The five selected proposals have a variety of narratives. The diversity deserves appreciation because it proves the high creativity of local creative industry players. Hopefully, the results of the work will be in line with our common expectations so that they are able to show to the public that the works of Indonesian filmmakers are not inferior to international works. And there is great hope that this will be a momentum for the revival of the creative industry in the midst of a pandemic,” explained Gumilar Ekalaya, Acting Head of Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office.

Participants whose works are chosen will also receive training on movielab directing, scriptwriting and image editing accompanied by mentors who are experienced in their fields.

Several speakers who will participate in the movielab is screenwriter Irfan Ramly, film production management by Gita Fara, introduction to editing by Andhy Pulung, and directing by Yosep Anggi Noen.

The five winning story idea proposals of the Jakarta Film Fund are: And That What Married is (Vivian Felicia Idris), One Night in Chinatown (William Adiguna), Ringroad (Andrew Kose), Before Night, We Are Still Together (Cindyfia Gusdiah Wati) and One Day at a Fishing Place (Mohamad Alfath Kamil). All completed films will be screened during the festival, from 18 to 21 November 2021.

Apart from the Jakarta Film Fund, there is another program that domestic and foreign filmmakers can participate in, namely the Film Submission program. Filmmakers can participate by registering long and short films through www.jakartafilmweek.com. Registration will remain open until 30 September 2021.
